The contribution of FSSPX to the creation of "Summorum Pontificum".

Motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, the most revolutionary in the recent history of the Church, caused many speculations: why, for whom, on what scale etc. One of these is: would SP come true if there was no FSSPX? I would like to express my opinion on that issue.

The vast majority, if not all, of these who answer positively on that question, make one, but crucial mistake; namely they take the rate of current interest in the Classic Roman Rite, simultaneously erasing FSSPX of that reality and draw the conclusion: Ordo Missae is strongly ingrained in hearts of the faithful, so it is wise and generous to permit them to attend this particular rite of the Mass. These analysts are blisfully unaware of the role which Brotherhood plays in reminding the Church his ancient, sanctified by the Tradition Liturgy. Yes, today there is large need for the St. Pius V Rite, but this need is the outcome of FSSPX activity in the Church and world. Without the adamant priests of Brotherhood the motu proprio would not have been announced because of the actions of modernist clergy, who try by all costs to knock off the Usus Antiquior into the chasm of oblivion. We may say of course: the Brotherhood is not the only institute devoted to propagating the Tradition of the Church though; there are also FSSP, IBP, ICRSS etc. Yes, indeed (I love this word), but these organisations were erected as the result of motu proprio Ecclesia Dei which was written as a response for the episcopal ordinations '88.

To sum up, statements that existence of FSSPX was not necessary to promulgate Summorum Pontificum are false and unfounded. They are caused by ignorance or by hostility, but equally harmful. It may be understandable, that many of the organisations would like to set apart from the Brotherhood not to be accused for "lefebvrism" but it is not advisable to do it by sacrificing the truth. To conclude, for these who are ignorant (because e.g. they lack apropriate methodological knowledge on analysing history), I would like to quote one of my golden rules: If I don't know nothing on the issue, I say nothing, because opinions taken out from nowhere may cause a lot of turmoil.
